How to password-protect and unlock a PDF

Secure sensitive PDFs with a password or remove protection when you have the current password.

Protect PDF

Protect PDF adds **password encryption** so only people with the password can open the file. Use this for contracts, salary slips, or KYC packets sent over email.

Step-by-step

  1. Sign in with a verified account.
  2. Open Protect PDF.
  3. Upload one PDF.
  4. Enter a **password** (minimum 4 characters — use a strong passphrase in production).
  5. Click **Protect PDF** → download `protected.pdf`.
  6. Test the file in your PDF viewer before deleting the unprotected original.

Protection uses **qpdf** on the server. If qpdf is not installed, the job will fail with a clear message — contact your admin to install `qpdf`.

Unlock PDF

Unlock PDF removes password protection when you **know the current password**. You cannot break unknown passwords — this is for files you own or were given the passcode for.

Step-by-step

  1. Open Unlock PDF.
  2. Upload the protected PDF.
  3. Enter the **PDF password**.
  4. Click **Unlock PDF** → download `unlocked.pdf`.

After unlocking you can merge, compress, or watermark the file in follow-up jobs.

Security notes

  • We process files on the server and delete inputs after the job; download results promptly on Free plans
  • Do not reuse marketplace passwords for document encryption
  • Premium users can re-download within 7 days from completed jobs

Account required

PDF protect and unlock require the same **registered, verified email** account as all PDF tools. Image tools in the browser remain available without an account.
